Penny Dreadfuls

The Penny Dreadfuls were an all-female alternative rock and neo-glam quartet active in Los Angeles, California, during the mid-to-late 1990s. They were noted for their heavy guitar riffs, gritty vocals, and provocative lyrical content that juxtaposed pop sensibilities with underground punk grit.

Formation and early years

The band's origins began in a California high school, where close friends Andrea Sanchez (drums) and Melanie Makaiwi (guitar) frequently discussed forming a musical project. After placing an advertisement in a local Los Angeles music publication, they recruited lead vocalist Anna Chaffee and bass player Chimene Gonzalez to complete the lineup.

The group established a clear goal from their inception: to build a compelling rock act evaluated solely on its musical merits, consciously pushing back against the novelty labels often applied to all-female groups in the hard rock scene.

Rising profile and indie releases

The quartet quickly embedded themselves in the West Coast independent music circuit. They earned early recognition as a formidable live act while opening for prominent 90s alternative mainstays including:

• Redd Kross

Their first official studio track was the seven-inch vinyl single "Sooner or Later". The song caught regional attention and was featured on the Triple X Records compilation album It Came From Beneath L.A.

Major label signing and debut album

The band's growing live reputation caught the attention of independent label Restless Records, who signed them to a recording contract. They entered the studio with acclaimed alternative music producer Dennis Herring (known for his work with bands like Satchel and Throwing Muses) to record their first full-length effort.

To build momentum for the album, the label released the aggressive, driving rock single "Fodder". In 1996, they released their self-titled debut album, Penny Dreadfuls, via Restless Records.

Critical reception

Music critics tracking their release through outlets like noted that the band frequently drew press comparisons to mainstream acts like Hole and The Go-Go's. However, their actual sound carved out a distinct space by leaning heavier into grimy hard rock structures paired with clever, left-of-center pop hooks.
